Leito Wildlife Reserve, Ecuador

Mountain Tapir, Andean Bears and Puma in the Andes

Leito Wildlife Reserve is a privately owned reserve in the inter Andean Valley consisting of some of the last remnants of paramos (moorlands) and high mountain forest. Leito is working to conserve this habitat which is the home to Endangered Mountain Tapir, Andean bears, Puma and Andean fox. Although ZWC is not yet working on them directly the reserve is also home to very rare orchids species and an endemic frog species that was first described on the reserve. You will stay with local people and experience their lives in rural Ecuador so have an amazing home stay experience too.

Conservation Scholarships

Investigating the ecology, habitat use and feeding behaviour of Andean Wildlife using Camera Traps and Radio Collaring.

This is a really unique opportunity to be part of developing new methodologies to use transect surveys, radio-collaring and camera trapping techniques to investigate the habitat use, feeding ecology and movements of a range of endangered and endemic animals between farm land, private land and national park in the Andean Mountains. This will be the beginnings of a long term research focus for Zoo and wildlife Conservation.
